Residential renovation

Full gut renovations in Oakland & Macomb County.

Down to the studs and back, or room by room. The housing here was built well and it's worth renovating properly — we take the whole house under one contract so the trades line up, the finishes relate to each other, and one company is accountable at the end.

The bones are worth keeping. The finishes aren't.

Houses built across Oakland and Macomb County in the 1950s, 60s and 70s were framed properly, sited well and given proportions nobody builds anymore. What they have is fifty-year-old kitchens, undersized bathrooms, closed-off plans and finishes that have been through three owners.

The production builders are busy with subdivisions — a gut rehab doesn't fit a volume business — so custom renovation falls to smaller shops, and most aren't set up to run a whole-house scope. That gap is why we exist in this form.

One contract, one standard, one company accountable.

Whole-home renovations rarely fail in a room. They fail in the seams: a kitchen finished to one standard and a bath to another, floors that don't transition, trim that changes through a doorway, four contractors each certain the delay belongs to somebody else.

We take the entire house under one contract. Kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, trim, doors, lighting, tile and finish carpentry are specified and sequenced together, so the house comes back as one thing.

What a whole-home renovation with us covers

  • Kitchens — layout changes, custom cabinetry, stone counters, full tile packages
  • Bathrooms — primary suites, wet rooms, curbless showers, slab walls, heated floors
  • Flooring throughout — hardwood, large-format tile, transitions that don't telegraph
  • Trim & finish carpentry — base, casing, crown, built-ins, closets, stair parts
  • Lighting & electrical — recessed layouts, fixture rough-in, panel work as needed
  • Plumbing — relocations, fixture sets, valve and drain work behind the walls
  • Doors, hardware & glass — including custom shower and interior glass
  • Paint & finishes — surface prep taken seriously, because it's what you see
  • Permits & inspections — pulled and passed as part of the contracted work

The kind of home this suits

Established homes in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Rochester Hills, Franklin, West Bloomfield, Northville, Grosse Pointe, Shelby Township and Washington Township — houses with good bones and dated finishes, where the renovation is worth doing to a standard that will still read as current in fifteen years.

We do not build additions. Renovation of existing space is the work we do best, and we'll tell you early if a project genuinely needs something we don't self-perform.

How a job runs

From walkthrough to keys.

The same five steps on every project, whether it's one room or the whole house.

1

Walk the job

We meet you at the property, look at the actual conditions, and talk through what you want and what the building will allow. No sales call, no showroom.

2

Written estimate

Notes from the walkthrough become a line-item estimate, typically emailed within a day. Scope and price in writing before anyone swings a hammer.

3

Schedule & build

A project manager holds the schedule, the permits and the inspections so the site is never idle waiting on someone. A qualified foreman runs the site itself, directing our tradespeople and holding the finish to standard every day the job is open.

4

Daily communication

Progress photos if you're not on site, and an immediate call — not an invoice surprise — the moment anything comes up outside the original scope.

5

Walkthrough & close

We walk the job with you the day before completion so anything you want corrected is handled on the final day. Then the invoice, and the keys.

Answers

Whole-home remodeling questions

Can we live in the house during a whole-home renovation?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on scope. If the kitchen and the primary bath are both down to studs, most families are better off out of the house — the work goes faster and cleaner, and you're not living in dust for the duration. If the renovation can be phased by floor or by wing, we'll sequence it that way and tell you honestly which rooms are usable when. That conversation happens at the estimate, not in week three.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. Permitting is our responsibility on the work we contract, and we build to pass inspection the first time rather than to pass a walkthrough. Municipalities across Oakland and Macomb County each have their own requirements and their own pace, and we account for that in the schedule up front.

Do we need an architect or designer first?

Not always. For renovations inside the existing footprint — reworking a layout, opening a wall, rebuilding kitchens and baths — we can often take it from your ideas straight to a buildable scope. When structural changes or drawings are genuinely required, we'll say so and work alongside your architect or designer. If you already have drawings, we can price and build straight from them.

Do you build additions?

No. Mount Vernon focuses on renovation of existing space rather than putting on additions — it's the work we do best and the work the finish standard was built around. If your project needs an addition, we'll tell you that early rather than after you've spent money.
